Loretta (Strub) Willger, 59, of Waukon, Iowa, died Saturday, October 8, 2005, surrounded by family at her home. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, October 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Eitzen, Minn., with Rev. Deb Meyer officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon and for one hour at the church before services Wednesday.

Loretta Helen was born December 5, 1945, in Caledonia, Minn., the daughter of Walter and Helen (Thiele) Schuttemeier. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Eitzen and graduated from Caledonia High School in 1963.

In May of 1964 she married Duane Strub. They were later divorced.

Loretta married Herman Willger December 28, 1996, at the West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church in rural Waukon.

In addition to raising her family and the duties of a homemaker, Loretta worked a wide range of jobs. She helped on the family dairy farm near Caledonia, worked in the apple orchards near La Crescent, was a receptionist at The Flair Hair Salon in La Crosse for many years, helped at Clay Basket Gift & Floral in Lansing and Sycamore House Gifts in Waukon, and was an advertising assistant for both the Waukon Standard and Allamakee Journal newspapers.

Loretta was a very social person and loved to visit and spend time with family and her many friends. She loved playing cards, gaming, golf and collecting. She was an avid shopper, always on the hunt for a bargain, and had a creative flair for decorating. In recent years she enjoyed traveling to many places with Herman and spending wonderful times together at their river cabin near Lansing. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and had formerly been active in St. Mary’s Catholic Church CCW in Caledonia and as a 4-H leader.

Survivors include her husband Herman of Waukon; four children, Alan (Joyce) Strub of Caledonia, Minn., and their children Rachel and Bradley, Christine Strub of Madison, Wis., and her daughter Lauren, Jennifer Strub of Minneapolis, Minn., and Matt (Terri) Strub of Caledonia, Minn., and their children Madelyn and Jack; two step-sons, Scott Willger of Waukon and his children Tade, Leah, Tom, and Sam, and Bryan (Laurie) Willger of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and their children Josh, Zach, Bryanna, and Jared; and three sisters, Marion (Ron) Nerstad of Spring Grove, Minn., Nanci Collins of Burnsville, Minn., and Brenda (Jim) Westby of Mabel, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established by the family.

* Online Editor's Note
Loretta was an important part of our staff here at the Waukon Standard for many years. I considered here a friend as well as a co-worker. She will be sorely missed by many!
