Karl Behning

Karl F. Behning, age 71, of Dyersville and formerly of Dubuque, died Friday, October 21, 2005, at his home. Services will be Wednesday, October 26 at St. Anthony’s Church at 10 a.m. Entombment will be in the Linwood Cemetery Mausoleum. Military Honors will be accorded by the Dubuque American Legion Post #6 and the Dyersville American Legion Post #137 Behr’s Funeral Services of Dubuque is in charge of arrangements.

Karl was born September 19, 1934, in a log house in rural Harpers Ferry, Iowa. He was the son of Karl W. “Charlie” and Mary E. (Ward) Behning.

Karl enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving 27 months in Germany, being honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant. He married Jean Lenzendorf November 3, 1956. He later married his wife Suzanne (Gross) Behning April 19, 1993 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Karl was a member of St. Francis Xavier Basilica Parish in Dyersville, Iowa. He was a member of the American Legion Dubuque Post #3 and Dyersville Post #137.

Karl was a maintenance electrician being employed by various businesses in Dubuque including Celotex, Vessel Systems, and Dubuque Greyhound Park and Casino. Karl attended Forestry School in his younger years and Auctioneering School in 1997.

Karl loved Bingo and Keno but most of all he loved his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Behning; five sons, Karl L. “Goose” of Asbury, Kevin (Julie) Behning of Dubuque, Kraig Behning of Anamosa, Kurt (Patti) Behning of Peosta, and Kimball (Ann) Behning of Springville; one step-daughter, Tammie Krier; four step-sons, Chuck (Becky) Polkinghorn, Michael (Sue) Polkinghorn, Patrick Polkinghorn, and Todd (Roxanne) Polkinghorn, all of Dubuque; two daughters-in-law, Patty and Lori; grandchildren Brooke, Meghan, Leah, and Danny Behning, Shelby and Sydney Behning, Spencer and Delaney Behning, David Polkinghorn, Christina, Anthony, and Nick Krier, Heather, Holly, and Hannah Polkinghorn, Jamie Kasparek and Steven Polkinghorn, Makayla and Mark Polkinghorn; two great-grandchildren, TySean Krier and Hailey VanCleve; and one sister, Florence Jones of Harpers Ferry.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John; a grandson, Jonathon Behning; a step-son, Mark S. Polkinghorn; and a special uncle, Max Behning.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque, 2255 JFK Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52002.
