James A. Ryan

James A. Ryan, age 77, of Lansing, Iowa, died Friday, April 9, 2004, at Thornton Manor Nursing Home in Lansing after a long battle with multiple scleroses. Memorial services were held Tuesday, April 13 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing, where military rites were accorded by the Gustav. F. Kerndt Post #5981 of the VFW. Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing was in charge of arrangements.

Jim was born in Waukon, Iowa, July 17, 1926, to Joseph and Celia (Cunningham) Ryan. He was married to Elaine Green May 3, 1952, at St. Peters Church in Clermont, Iowa.

Jim served in the Navy for two years, then graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in business and accounting. He spent twenty years of his career at Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank in Lansing, where he started as a filing clerk and retired as executive vice president in 1974.

Jim was a member of the Gustav F. Kerndt Post #5981 of the VFW and the Knights of Columbus as a 4th degree member.

Jim is survived by his loving wife and devoted caregiver of nearly 52 years, Elaine (Green) Ryan of Lansing; four children, Teri (William) Rethwisch of Lansing, Ken (Heidi) Ryan of Alexandria, Minn., Mark (Linda) Ryan of Denver, Colo., and Carol (David) Wilkie of St. Paul, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Ryan of Clear Lake, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Lee Ryan and Jean Ryan.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Celia and Joseph, and two brothers, Joseph Jr. and Leo Ryan.

The family would like to extend its deepest gratitude to the staff at Thornton Manor and to many friends in the Lansing community for many years of love and support.
