Ella Meyer

Ella Caroline Friederike (Palas) Meyer was born November 5, 1902 near Luana, Iowa. She died Thursday, August 25, 1994 in the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. She was 91 years old.

She was baptized in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville and confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church at Luana, Iowa. She graduated from the Luana Consolidated School.

On February 20, 1923 she was married to Alfred C. Meyer at the home of her parents near Luana. To this union, three children were born.

Ella and her husband owned and operated a hatchery and feed and farm supply business in Postville from 1927 until 1965. Ella was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and the Women of the ELCA. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. Ella liked to crochet and to make appliqued quilts. Both Ella and Alfred loved to go fishing.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, who died in 1981, a son, Dean, who died in 1984, a daughter-in-law, Eilene, six brothers, Henry, Arthur, Lloyd, Leroy, LaVerne and Herbert Palas, and a sister, Helen (Mrs. Lawrence) Mohs.

Surviving her is a son, Dale (Jack) Meyer and his wife, Evelyn of Postville, a daughter, Jane and her husband, Joseph Panoch, Jr. of Castalia, five grandchildren, Brad Meyer of Sunnyvale, Calif., Tracy Gutfeld of Hayward, Calif., Gem Meyer and his wife, Shelley of Kitty Hawk, N. C., James Panoch of Castalia, JoEllen Panoch Foels and her husband, Loren, of Postville, a brother, Glen Palas of Luana and a sister, Margaret Engelhardt of Decorah, Iowa.

Funeral services for Ella Meyer were held Saturday, August 27, 1994 in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. The Reverend Charles W. Miller officiated. Marian Schutte was the organist and Ronald Meyer was the soloist. Casket bearers were Roland Meyer, Richard G. Meyer, Dave Palas, Harold Meyer, Don Meyer, LeRoy Palas, Jr., Gerald Meyer, Frederick Meyer and John Engelhardt. Honorary casket bearers were LeRoy Gass, Gerald Palas, Bernell J. Palas, James Klocke, Ernest Palas and Milton Mohs. The Schutte Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.
