Dr. John Meierkord

Dr. John F. Meierkord, 92, of Waukon, Iowa, died Saturday, July 30, 2005, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 3 at 11 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

John Frederick Meierkord was born April 24, 1913, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Fred Henry and Lydia (Bieber) Meierkord. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. He graduated from Waukon High School in 1930 and attended Waukon Junior College for two years. For several years John was a fishing guide on the Mississippi River, worked for Webster Lumber Company, and worked with a road crew constructing the road between Waukon and Postville. He returned to school at the University of Iowa where he graduated with a degree in dentistry in 1939, and returned to Waukon to start his practice.

August 19, 1942, he married Helen Hermanson in Waukon. John served his country from 1942 to 1945 during World War II as a Captain in the US Army. After the war he moved back to Waukon where he continued to operate his dental practice until his retirement in 1982.

John was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, where he served on numerous boards and was also active with the youth groups. He was a lifetime member of the Dubuque District Dental Society and the University of Iowa Alumni Association. He also was a member of Shriners, Kiwanis, and VFW and served on the Waukon Park Board and Oakland Cemetery Board. John enjoyed wood carving, making wine, and gardening. He and Helen had a cabin on the Mississippi for many years where they spent many happy times with family and friends and where he became an expert fisherman. His family appreciated him as an exceptional husband, father, and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Helen of Waukon; a son, Fred (Judy) Meierkord of Ames, Iowa; and a daughter, Ann Meierkord of Albuquerque, N.M.; three granddaughters Tara, Kelly, and Erin Meierkord; and a great-grandson, Aaron Owen Link.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, John Paul.

Casketbearers are Tom Hansmeier, Eaton Cota, Jack Heffern, Luke Cota, Mike Murrell, and Keith Mason.
