Mabel W. Miller

Mabel W. Miller was born to parents August Herman and Caroline Minnie Brandt on Dec. 4, 1900 on their farm in rural Waukon. She died on Sept. 30, 1992 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. She was 91.

She was baptized at Zalmona Presbyterian and confirmed there also by Rev. Zissler in 1914. After her schooling, Mabel did some housekeeping for various area residents. On Dec. 16, 1925 she married Dewey George Miller in Waukon by the Rev. Krebs. After marriage, she farmed with her husband in Ludlow until moving to Waukon in 1959, where she cared for elderly ladies in her home before working at the Good Samaritan Center of seven years, retiring in 1975.

She especially enjoyed cooking and raising flowers, but also liked embroidering, sewing, quilting, reading, canning, having company, visiting and reminiscing with family and friends. She was a member of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, and belonged to ladies groups there.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dewey, who died on August 24, 1957; her grandson Darwin Allan Hanson in 1956; and her brothers Elmer and Lawrence Herman.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Gordon (Marlene) Meyer; her son Norman Miller and his wife Beth of Alamo, Texas; her sisters Hertha Grotegut of Frankville, Mrs. Otto (Dorothea) Schuttmeier of Waukon, and Bernice Hagen of Waukon; her granddaughters Musty and Mimi Habhab and her grandson Abby Habhab, as well as her step-great grandchildren Megan and Nichole Hawkins.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 3, 1992 at the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, the Rev. James Elvig officiating. She was buried in the Bethlehem Cemetery. Casket bearers were Brad Herman, Gene Herman, Harold Hoffman Jr., Duane Duvel, Donald Hanson and Gary Hermeier. Funeral arrangements were by the Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
