Mrs. HENRY (Lena Hartmann) BEHRENS 1866-1950

Funeral services were held Saturday at 1:30 at the Schutte Funeral Home and at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church for Mrs. Lena Behrens, 83, who passed away at Postville Hospital on July 26, 1950. The rites were conducted by Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig, pastor of St. Paul's. Burial was at Centennial Cemetery at Castalia.

Mrs. Lena Hartmann Behrens, daughter of Henry Hartmann and Minnie Strahmeyer Hartmann, was born November 24, 1866, at Husum, Hanover, Germany, and departed this life on July 26, 1950 at Postville, aged 83 years.

Mrs. Behrens was received into active membership in the Lutheran Church on April 24, 1881, also in her native Germany. Mrs. Behrens was united in marriage with Henry Behrens of Guttenberg, on February 16, 1888. To this union two children were born, one of who survives the passing of their mother.

Mrs. Behrens left Germany for America at the age of 14, together with her parents and two sister. The family settled in Guttenberg. Following her marriage Mr. and Mrs. Behrens established their home in Guttenberg. Later they purchased a farm near Ossian, which was their home until 1904. In 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Behrens moved to Postville, which has been her home since. Mr. Behrens died in 1906.

Mrs. Behrens is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lena Schroeder of Postville; one sister, Mrs. Louise Debner of Waukon; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter in infancy; and four sisters.
