Angeline Mary Hinman Bellows

Died, at her home in French Creek twsp., Allamakee County, Thursday, January 30, 1894. Mrs. Angeline M. Bellows, aged 73 years, 5 months, and 15 days. Mrs. Bellows was born in Chautaqua county, N. Y., August 15, 1820. Her father, a soldier of 1812, having emigrated thither from Connecticut soon after the close of the war. When she was 12 years of age the family came west, stopping a short time in Chicago, then a small place, and finally settling near Beloit, Wis.; and her only brother (now living in California and 81 years old) Rev. Justus Hinman, became one of the pioneer preachers of the Rock River Conference, and there married a sister of Anson Burlingame, Minister to China. At the age of 20 she married Porter Bellows, and removed to Rockton, Ills., where four of their eight children were born. In 1852 the family came to French Creek twsp., then a comparative wilderness and with very few families living in it. In 1861 the French Creek Postoffice was established with her [husband] as P.M. and she as assistant. At his death 15 years since, she became P.M. and in over 30 years continuous service was a faithful public servant. In distributing the tri-weekly mail to some seventy families, as well as in the complex details of business in even a country post office, she was efficient and faithful. Her last illness of a week was of a billous and catarrhal nature, following a few weeks trouble with a diseased foot, which was thought to be getting well. In early life she joined the M.E. church and though for many years she had been shut in from church privileges, her Bible lying within reach of her hand, gave evidence of being read daily, and all can testify that she lived the Golden Rule, and her last illness expressed her faith and trust in her Savior. One sister, Mrs. Martha Gray, of West Union, her brother above mentioned, five children and a number of grand children survive, of her immediate family, to mourn the loss of an amiable sister and a kind mother and grandmother. The funeral services were held at Mount Hope church at 2 o'clock p.m., Friday, conducted by Rev. J. R. McGlade of Lansing, and her remains were laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining. The services were attended by a large concourse of people.
