Funeral services were held Sunday from the Schutte Funeral home to St. Paul's Lutheran Church for Mrs. F. W. Benjegerdes, 82, who passed away Thursday at the home of her son, Henry, following a lingering period of declining health. The rites were in charge of Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig, pastor of St. Paul's. Burial was in Postville Cemetery.
Caroline Elizabeth Schulte Benjegerdes, daughter of John Henry Schulte and Mary Adelheid Waterman Schulte, was born September 7, 1870, in Read township, Clayton county, and departed this life on October 23, 1952, after a lingering period of declining health at Postville, aged 82 years. Mrs. Benjegerdes was received into active membership in the Lutheran Church on April 5, 1885.
She was united in marriage with Frederick William Benjegerdes of Garnavillo on March 4, 1897. To this union two sons were born, both of whom survive the passing of their mother. Mrs. Benjegerdes spent the early years of her life on the home farm of her parents in Read township. In 1891 her parents retired to Garnavillo and Mrs. Benjegerdes continued to make her home with her parents and cared for them.
Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Benjegerdes spent one year in Garnavillo. They then established their family home on a farm two and one half miles northwest of Postville, the present home of their son, Henry and family.
In 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Benjegerdes left the farm and moved to Postville. The next three years were spent as residents of Postville. The following year was spent in Dubuque. In 1908 Mr. and Mrs. Benjegerdes returned to the home farm northwest of Postville, where they resided until 1931. In 1931 Mr. and Mrs. Benjegerdes retired to Postville which continued to be their home.
Mrs. Benjegerdes spent the last 14 months of her life at the home of her son, Henry, and family and it was here that death came to her. Mr. and Mrs. Benjegerdes were privileged to spend more than 55 years of married life together.
Left to mourn her passing are her husband; two sons: Henry and Louis, both of Postville; six grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends. Mrs. Benjegerdes was preceded in death by her parents and eight brothers and sisters.
