LYLE BURKE - died 1966

Lyle Burke, 17, of Dorchester was fatally injured when he was struck by a car while lying in the center of state highway 13 about 4 miles north of Waukon, early Saturday morning, July 15, 1966. He was struck by a car driven by Mrs. Karen Schutte of Postville. According to the official accident report, Burke was lying on his back in the northbound land of highway 13 with his head approximately on the center of the line of the highway. The Schutte car was traveling north on the highway from Waukon. Passengers in the car included Mrs. Jean Fishback of Postville and three small children. They were getting an early start on a vacation trip into Canada, where their husbands, Dave Schutte and Charles Fishback, were to join them later. The station wagon they were driving struck the Burke youth as he was lying on the highway a short distance from a curve. With the lights not shining on the highway directly ahead, Mrs. Schutte said she could not see the boy's body until it was too late to avoid impact. After impact the body stayed with the car for approximately 74 feet and was rolled into the left lane of the highway as the car slowed. Investigating officers said they believe Burke was walking to his rural home. It was reported that he had attended a dance at Decorah earlier that night. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Burke of Dorchester. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at St. Mary's church, Hanover, with burial in the church cemetery.
