GENEVIEVE BURLING 1880-1961
Funeral services for Miss Genevieve Burling, 80, who lived at Waterloo, were conducted by Dr. Floyd Henshaw at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 27, 1961, in the chapel of First Methodist Church in Waterloo. Committal services were held at 2:00 p.m. that afternoon at Postville with the Rev. Walter T. Martin, pastor of Postville Community Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial was in Postville Cemetery. Miss Burling died at 9:15 a.m., Tuesday, October 24, 1961, in Schoitz Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, of a cerebral hemorrhage.
She was born November 5, 1880, at Postville, and was the daughter of Frederick and Flora Ketchum Burling. After graduation from Postville high school, she attended Upper Iowa University at Fayette for two years and was graduated with a degree in piano from the American conservatory of Music in Chicago.
Miss Burling taught piano for several years and later lived in Des Moines, where she was employed by the Iowa Department of Public Instruction and was then engaged as engrossing clerk for the Iowa Senate. She also held positions in Chicago, New York and Washington, D. C. She traveled extensively in this country and abroad and had lived in Waterloo intermittently since 1926. She was affiliated with First Methodist church of Waterloo, and was a member of Chapter FE of the P. E. O. Sisterhood.
Miss Burling is survived by one brother, W. H. Burling of Elkader; two nieces, Mrs. Bernice Schroeder of Columbia, Missouri, and Miss Irma Burling of Clarksville; and four nephews, Robert W. Marquis and Richard B. Marquis of Waterloo; Carl F. Burling of Park Ridge, Illinois, and Robert H. Burling of Postville. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
