Services for Leon E. Chamberlain were held in the Community Presbyterian church, Postville, Tuesday, May 30, 1972, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dick Harberts officiating. Mr. Chamberlain had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center, Postville from May, 1969 until May 18, 1972 when he was hospitalized in the Community Memorial hospital and died there May 26, 1972.
Leon Everett Chamberlain, son of Albert L. and Mary Anna Sutcliffe Chamberlain, was born September 16, 1892 on the home farm in Franklin Township, Allamakee county, north of Luana. He attended schools in Franklin township and a business course at Oelwein.
Mr. Chamberlain was married to Esther Smith November 15, 1916 at Cresco. To this union five children were born: Wayne, Kenneth, Marjorie, Earl and Harlan. The couple farmed on the home place until December, 1942 when they moved to Postville.
Mr. Chamberlain was a member of the Community Presbyterian church and a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He was an avid cribbage player, made cribbage boards and won honors in state tournaments.
Mr. Chamberlain was preceded in death by his wife, Esther, March 16, 1969; his parents; a son, Kenneth Howard on December 6, 1918; a daughter, Mrs. Ervin (Marjorie Eileen) Walz, May 21, 1946, a granddaughter Karen Marie Chamberlain, March 13, 1950 and one brother William L. Chamberlain [October 2, 1962].
Surviving are three sons, Wayne on the home farm, Luana; Earl and Harlan both of Cedar Rapids; two grandsons, nine granddaughters, three great granddaughters and other relatives.
Interment was in the Postville cemetery.
