MORTIMER CHARLES DEERING 1880-1957

Mortimer Charles Deering, son of Caroline and Charles Deering, was born October 2, 1880, on a farm in Allamakee county seven miles north of Postville.

He died at the Postville Community Hospital Friday, June 14, 1957 at the age of 76 years.

Mort Deering attended rural school in Allamakee county. He spent most of his life farming.

On October 11, 1903 he was married to Bertha Uhl at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Cook, north of Postville.

Mort Deering is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Dorothy) Fischer of Chicago, Mrs. Kenneth (Esther) Schultz of Postville and Mrs. W. B. (Marjorie) Wallis of Seattle, Washington. A son Irving preceded him in death on April 5, 1957. One sister, Mrs. Laura Mackey of Odebolt, and seven grandchildren also survive.

Mr. Deering was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, a former member of the Bethel United Brethren Church, and a member of the Community Presbyterian Church of Postville which he joined on January 22, 1933. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Community Presbyterian Church four and one-half years being chairman of the board at the time of his death.

He was elected to the Board of Supervisors of Allamakee county for two terms from 1937 to 1942. He was accorded the distinct honor of being elected for three additional terms to the Board of Supervisors beginning in 1948 and serving up to the time of his death. He gave to the citizens of Allamakee county 15 years of service on the Board of Supervisors. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Big-Four Fair for many years and also served as mayor of Postville.

Funeral services were held at the Community Presbyterian Church on Monday, June 17, at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Walter T. Martin in charge of the rites. Burial was in the Postville cemetery.
