Mrs. CARL (Mary A. Marston) HOLTER 1854-1930

Mary A. Marston, daughter of James Cram and Nancy Fisher Marston, was born on a farm near Postville, Iowa, October 21, 1854, and passed away at Long Beach, California, January 18, 1930, after a few days illness. Her father was a true pioneer, engaged in farming, and in the duties of a Baptist circuit rider.

Her education was received in the district school, the Postville public school and at Wilton Seminary, Wilton Junction, Iowa. She taught for 10 years in schools near Postville, Waterloo and Parkersburg, including one year in New York state. Many of her pupils still live here.

On May 22, 1883, she was married to Carl Holter at Postville, Iowa, where all her married life was spent. One daughter, Edna, wife of W. H. Burling, was born of this union.

Mrs. Holter was a member of the local Baptist church until its close, [missing] __men of the Methodist church for 43 years, and later of the Community Presbyterian church. She was a charter member of Postville Chapter No. 238, Order of the Eastern Star; a charter member of the Postville Monday Club, and a member of Chapter FT, P.E.O.

Besides the husband and daughter she leaves to mourn her loss three grandchildren, Carl, Bernice and Bobby Burling; a sister, Mrs. Della Waters, of Cedar Falls; and a brother, Jasper, of Earlham, Iowa; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Mrs. Holter was a woman of splendid christian character, a true homemaker, a devoted mother, and a friend to all with whom she came in contact. Her home, her church, her clubs and her friends have all benefited because of her fidelity and sincerity to the finest and best things in life.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 19th, at three p.m. at the McFayden Mission Funeral Home, Long Beach, Calif., the Rev. Don Ford officiating. Mrs. Castle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ripley, sang "There Need Be No Shadows When Day Is Ended," playing her own accompaniment on the auto harp. Rev. Ford spoke very fitting, comforting words, basing his remarks on First Corinthians, 15th Chapter.

Amid beautiful flowers in a homey atmosphere, kind friends bade farewell. About sixty former Postville friends, all members of the Postville-Southern California Club, organized some ten years ago, and of which Mr. and Mrs. Holter were charter members, were present at the funeral to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of the one fallen by the wayside and extend their comforting words and tenderest sympathy to him who survives.

Among those present were the following: Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Laros, W. C. McNeil and wife, Charley Sebastian and wife, Mr. Ripley and wife, Cora Ripley Cassel, Emma Easton Luce, James A. Parker and wife, John T. Parker and wife, Minnie Parker and daughter, Emma Luhman and her niece, Esther Schultz; Velma Shepherd, A. E. Cornell and wife, Miss Olive Orr, Alice Kerr Dodge, Ethel Gray, Mrs. Alward, Mrs. Hardwick, E. T. Courson, Jay Marston and wife, Florence Ward, Mrs. W. W. Courson and aunt, Mrs. Knowles; Mr. and Mrs. John Barton Jones and her niece, Dr. Phaelan; Rube Eaton and wife, Mike Collins and wife, Calvin Clark and wife, Charley Wilson and wife, Mrs. B. F. Taylor, Ed Eaton, Frank W. Eaton and wife, Mr. Butterfield, Mr. and Mrs. Kirk, Mr. and Mrs. Hancock, Will Conley, Mrs. W. W. Shroyer, Mrs. Lucy Chriss, C. P. Smith and wife, Anna Douglass, Bessie Blessin, Mrs. Comstock and daughter Mrs. Richards, Frank Comstock's mother and sister, Rolla Miller and wife, W. C. Thoma and wife, H. D. Webb and wife.

Following the services in California the remains were prepared for shipment back to the old home in Postville, where they arrived last Thursday, accompanied by Mr. Holter, and on Friday afternoon, following a brief service at the Schutte Funeral Parlor, the final services were held from the Community Presbyterian church, Rev. R. F. Galloway officiating, and the large gathering present and the profusion of beautiful flowers all testified to the large place Mrs. Holter held in the hearts of those among whom she had resided practically all her life.

Interment was made in Postville cemetery.

Those from out of town in attendance at the funeral were Charles G. Burling of Clarksville, Mrs. Frank L. Marquis and Miss Genevieve Burling of Waterloo, Mrs. M. Stevenson of Chicago, Mrs. James Bryson of Waukon and Albert Christofferson of Castalia.
