WALTER ALBERT MEYER 1897-1918
Walter Albert Meyer was born in Allamakee County, Iowa, January 26, 1897. He spent his young life on the home farm, the past year helping neighboring farmers with their work.
On September 6th he left with a contingent of army men from Allamakee County, going to Camp Dodge, where he had been in training but a short time when he contacted Spanish Influenza, which developed into pneumonia, causing his death on Sunday, October 13th, at the base hospital, where he was taken for treatment. The remains were shipped here yesterday, and taken to Postville where funeral services were conducted at the grave by his pastor, Rev. A. Daugs of Ev. Lutheran Cong., of Monona.
Walter was the youngest child of Mr. & Mrs. August H. Meyer, of Monona, was a bright, industrious young man, answered the call to colors in a true patriotic spirit, and while not permitted to be long in the service, his life was dedicated to the cause, and in the cause he died.
He is survived by his parents, three brothers, Gust, of Lily, South Dakota; Bennie and Erwin on the home farm, and one sister, Mrs. Amanda Kruse, of Lily, South Dakota, an aged grandmother, Mrs. Dorothy Meyer of Monona, besides many other relatives and friends who sincerely mourn his untimely death.
Mr. & Mrs. Meyer have indeed the sympathy of all in this community, in the loss of their baby boy, who has been taken from them just as he was entering manhood with the brightest of hopes ahead of him.
The death date was October 13, 1918 - contributed by Margo Harbridge
