EUCLID C. MARSTON

Euclid C. Marston, lifelong resident of this community, passed away Wednesday evening, November 27, at Postville Hospital where he had been taken a short time before because of a sudden illness. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the Community Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Walter T. Martin in charge of the service. Interment was in the Postville cemetery.

Mr. Marston was born September 20, 1891, on a farm three miles northeast of Postville as the son of Arthur Fisher Marston and Jennie Carithers Marston, and spent much of his lifetime on the home farm. He was graduated from Postville high school and Cornell college, and later took graduate work at Iowa State College and at the State University of Iowa. Following his graduation he taught school at Panora, Guthrie county, and the returned to the home farm.

Mr. Marston stems from one of the pioneer families of this section of the state, his great-grandfather, Reuben Smith, being the builder of the Old Stone House which was recently destroyed by fire after being a landmark in northeastern Iowa for over 100 years.

He was married to Marie Danner of Yale, Iowa, in 1918 and to this union five children were born, Jean [Lopez], who resides in Tampa, Florida; Joseph of Morton Grove, Illinois: Craig of Spokane, Washington; Virginia [Douglas] of Elgin, Illinois; and Dwight of Carthage, Illinois. His wife passed away in 1932.

Mr. Marston was married to Amy Meier of Postville in 1936 and she, together with the children, five grandchildren; and one brother, Jay Marston, of Los Angeles, California, and two sisters, Vera (Mrs. Stanley Fitzsimmons) of Pomeroy, Washington; and Daisy (Mrs. Lafe Tague) of Cedar Rapids, survive.

Mr. Marston was active in many community affairs. At the time of his passing he was a member of the Allamakee County Board of Assessment and Review and was Post Township Republican Committeeman, having held these positions for many years. He was a member of the Postville Kiwanis Club and of the Masonic Lodge, and was a member of the Session of the Community Presbyterian Church.

He served as a member of the Postville school board for many years and was its president for much of the time. Mr. Marston, in addition to his interest in county, state and national political affairs, was keenly interested in local civic affairs. He was one of the organizers of the Big-Four Farmers Institute, forerunner of the present Big-Four Fair, and served as its president until illness compelled him to resign several years ago. For many years he served as secretary of the Postville Farmers Cooperative Society and was also an employee in that organization for several years.
