Mrs. CHARLES H. (Amelia Splies) MEIER

Funeral services are being held this afternoon for Mrs. Amelia Meier at 1:30 from the Schutte Funeral Home to St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig will conduct the final rites.

Mrs. Meier passed away Sunday at her home in Postville.

Amelia Splies Meier, daughter of Jacob Splies and Christena Brooker Splies, was born March 20, 1859 at Garnavillo, and departed this life at her late home in Postville on May 8 aged 90 years.

Mrs. Meier was united in marriage with Charles H. Meier of Garnavillo on September 16, 1884. To this union three children were born, two of whom survive the passing of their mother.

Mrs. Meier spent the years of her life prior to her marriage at Garnavillo. As a child she lived on the old military trail to Dubuque, two miles south of Garnavillo, and watched the soldiers from this vicinity march along the military trail to Dubuque for service in the Civil War. She could also recall the hauling of grain to the mill at Dubuque by oxen and other incidents of the pioneer days.

After her marriage to Charles H. Meier, the couple established their home on a farm three miles north of Postville where they remained for 32 years. Thirty-three years ago, in 1916, Mr. and Mrs. Meier retired from farming and moved to Postville, where they spent their declining years. Mrs. Meier, the last of her parental family to depart this life, thus lived through and experienced an important era in the life of our country.

Left to mourn her passing are two daughters: Vina, Mrs. Ed. Poesch, of Postville, and Mrs. Orma Schultz of Postville; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mrs. Meier was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Lester, who died at the age of 16, in 1906; one grandchild, Lyle Poesch; three brothers: Fred, John, and William Splies; two sisters: Carrie, Mrs. John Wirkler, and Louise, Mrs. John Meier.
