Louis F. Schroeder, Local Business Man, Passes Away Friday

Funeral Held Monday; Await Arrival of Son Before Burial Is Made

Louis F. Schroeder, 58, since 1924 a business man of Postville, passed away last Friday morning at the Colonial hospital at Rochester, Minn., following a short illness. Mr. Schroeder, until a few weeks ago, had been active at his shoe store which he recently purchased from Edward Poesch, when he was taken ill. He was first removed to the hospital at New Hampton and then to Rochester. His family was at his bedside when he passed away.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran church with the Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig officiating. Commitment services at Postville cemetery were delayed until today awaiting the arrival of Sergeant Merlin Schroeder, a son, who came from his post in the West Indies upon getting the message of his father's passing. Postville business houses were closed during the funeral service.

From 1911 to 1924 Mr. Schroeder conducted a farm north of Castalia. Coming to Postville he engaged in the milling business, then entered into partnership with his brother, Edward, in the grocery and variety store. Later he took over the variety store end of the business which he operated until purchasing the shoe store.

Louis Frederick Schroeder was born July 4, 1885, on a farm near Postville, as the son of William H. and Minnie Loeffler Schroeder. On July 4, 1911, he was married to Miss Lena Behrens of Postville by the late Rev. J. Gass. To this union eight children were born, all of whom, together with the wife survive. The children are Elliott Schroeder of Postville, Sergeant Merlin Schroeder with the United States Army stationed in the West Indies, Ileta (Mrs. Harry Tyler) of Paso Robles, Calif., Palmer, Dale, June, Lowell and Norman, all at home.

He is also survived by three grandchildren, Patsy and Robert Schroeder of Postville, and Warren James Tyler of Paso Robles, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Fred C. Schara of Austin, Minn., Mrs. John C. Kohrs of Postville, and Mrs. Thomas Monroe of Castalia; one brother, Edward F. Schroeder of Postville, as well as many other relatives and friends. His parents and one brother, William C. Schroeder passed away several years ago.

Note: Louis and wife had nine children. They had an un-named baby girl that was born and died July 6, 1913 and is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery. It was a premature birth due to a runaway one week before. Book 1914-1919, Page One.
