Died, at his home, six miles northeast of Postville, June 19th, 1895, John N. SMITH, aged 66 years, 9 months and 12 days. The deceased was born in Atica, N.Y., but came to Iowa while yet a young man and settled at Decorah, where he remained for a few years.

He was united in marriage to Miss Susan S. LEE, June 24th, 1855, and soon afterward moved on the farm where he spent the remainder of his days.

To Mr. and Mrs. SMITH were born eight children, five daughters and three sons. Five of the number have gone on before, while three daughters yet remain.

After a year or more of failing health he was finally prostrated with spinal disease from which he suffered intensely for more than four weeks, when death came to his relief. From the first of his fatal illness he seemed to be aware that his days were about numbered. He was perfectly resigned to his fate and spoke of his departure in the strongest hope of life beyond, urging his friends to live right and prepare for heaven.

He was converted and united with the Bethel U.B. church more than thirteen years ago, and held his membership there until the day of his death. He seemed to be perfectly conscious until the last, and selected the hymns to be used at his funeral.

He could not speak for some days before his death, but in the very last moments of his life he cast a lingering look at his daughter, then at his wife, and turning his eyes upward as indicating his departure thither, he then closed his eyes to all earthly scenes and fell asleep in Jesus. Now there is no more watching at his bedside, but he is gone to join the society of those gone before.

The funeral was held at the Bethel U.B. church, Friday, June 21st, conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. HARPER. A large audience was in attendance to show their respect to the departed, after which the remains were laid to rest in a beautiful casket in the Minert graveyard. Peace to his ashes.
