Ralph B. Saak, 96, of Waukon, died Thursday, November 6, 2003, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Sunday, November 9 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial was in Zalmona Cemetery, rural Waukon. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Ralph Benjamin Saak was born January 17, 1907, on the Union Prairie Township, rural Waukon, farm of his parents, Henry C. and Mary (Sanderman) Saak. He was confirmed at the Zalmona Presbyterian Church, graduated from Southwest Bell School in 1922, and attended Waukon High School. Ralph worked for Bresnahan Construction for several years. Later, he farmed with his brothers, raised bees, and sold honey. He was very proud of his bee hives. Ralph enjoyed woodworking and gardening, and was an avid reader. Survivors include a niece, Joan (Melvin) Hopp of Homestead, Iowa; three grandnephews, Gary (Carol) Hopp, Derek (Tammera) Hopp, and Gregg Hopp; two grandnieces, Terry Jo (Steve) Hegewald and Kim (Chuck) Brockmann. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Arthur, William and George Saak; and two sisters, Helen Saak and Frieda Hanke. Casketbearers are Melvin, Gary and Derek Hopp; Chuck Brockmann; Roger Hesse; and Neil Becker.
