Hartley Enyart Sr., age 81, of Waukon, died Monday, October 27, 2003, at Gundersen-Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis. Funeral services were held Friday, October 21 at Forest Mills United Methodist Church in rural Postville, with Rev. Steve Campbell officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements.
Hartley James Enyart Sr. was born October 21, 1922, in rural Postville, the son of James and Frieda (Martens) Enyart. He attended rural elementary schools in the rural Frankville area and the Red School in rural Luana and graduated from Waukon High School in 1942. On May 19, 1944, Hartley married Beulah Lawson at the Forest Mills United Methodist Church in rural Postville. Hartley and Beulah farmed in Jefferson Township until 1970. Hartley then worked for the Dairy Department for NFO for several years. They also managed the Disco Station for two years and the Village Motel for one year. In 1985, they moved to Dallas, Texas, where they took care of an elderly couple for two years and then part time for several years. Hartley and Beulah moved back to the farm in 1989. Hartley was a long-time member of Forest Mills United Methodist Church. He enjoyed reading books, visiting, telling stories, and talking about politics with family and friends, especially the shut-ins. Hartley was very proud of his lawn and garden.Survivors include his wife, Beulah of Waukon; two sons, Hartley Jr. (Vicky) and David (Christine), both of Waukon; a daughter, Joyce (Lanny) Marting of Postville; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, William (Esther) of Lancaster, Texas, and Donald (Sara) of Postville. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, James Donald. Honorary casketbearers were Verdon Swenson, Marvin Flack, Kenneth Kerndt, and James Mackay. Casketbearers were his grandsons, Scott, Erik, David G., Dustin, and Daniel Enyart and Matthew Marting.
