Doris E. Johnson, 83, of Waukon, died Saturday, September 27, 2003, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis., surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 30 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements. Doris Eileen O'Brien was born September 9, 1920, on the Paint Rock Township farm of her parents, Thomas and Crystal (Reed) O'Brien. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Paint Rock and attended rural elementary schools and graduated from Harpers Ferry High School in 1937. On March 2, 1946, she married Olaf Johnson at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Paint Rock. They lived in Cedar Rapids until 1955, when they moved back to the West Ridge area and started farming the Johnson family farm. Doris and Olaf retired in 1984 when they moved into Waukon. She moved to the Good Samaritan Center in April 2000. Doris will be remembered for her love of all sports. She played basketball in high school and was an avid bowler when she was younger, which eventually led to Nationals in Chicago. Doris enjoyed watching sports on television, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and her "Cubbies," and loved the great outdoors and was an avid ginseng hunter. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was very proud of her Irish heritage. Doris was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and its Rosary Society and a past member of St. John's the Baptist Catholic Church at West Ridge. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Olaf of Waukon; one daughter, Jackie (Robert) Keller of Norwalk, Wis.; three sons, Carl (Julie), David (Robin), and Jeffery (Diana), all of Waukon; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Laurayne (Donald) Easley and Lois Robinson, both of Harpers Ferry, and Theresa (Robert) Quinlan of Dubuque, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters, Mary O'Brien, Betty Boardman and Joyce Farley. Casketbearers were Olaf D. Johnson, Don Easley Jr., John Easley, Marty Boardman, Leon and Ray Manning.
