Death claims well known pioneer Monday afternoon
Jacob Marti was born June 12, 1842, in Canton Glarus, Switzerland. With his parents and his brother and three sisters he came to America in 1853, then a lad of 11 years on the sailing vessel John Hancock. In 1855 he came to Allamakee country and remained here the rest of his life.

At the age of 20 he married the widow of his cousin Frederick and took over the care of the two sons of his wife by that marriage. Five children were born to this union; Henry, George, Catherine, William and Emma. After the death of his wife her cared for his children for a number of years, until he married on Jan. 30, 1882, Miss Sarah Iverson with whom he lived in happy wedlock for nearly 43 years, until death took him from her side.
Deceased was not only a well- known man in this community, but he had the respect and confidence of all who knew him. Upright and earnest in all his undertakings he made a success of life. The last years of his life he retired from his farm to reside in Waukon. Three weeks ago he sustained a fall from a step ladder receiving injuries from which he never recovered, and on Monday afternoon, Sept. 29, 1924 he passed to his eternal rest, at the advanced age of 82 years, 4 months and 17 days. During his illness he had the devoted care of his wife and children and a nurse from La Crosse. Mr. Marti was the last charter member of the Congregational church at Churchtown. Since he lived in Waukon he attended Zion Reformed church.
He leaves to mourn his death his widow, Mrs. Sarah Marti, two stepsons, John of Makee township and Casper of Minneapolis, and his own children, Henry of Lansing township, George, Mrs. Catherine Gaine of Brownsville; William of Kasson, Minn.; Jacob J. of Mason City; Mrs. Anna Petrehn of Austin, MInn., and Philip of Jefferson township. A daughter Emma preceded the father in death. Besides the widow and his children, 26 grandchildren and three great grandchildren survive him. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 1:30 o’clock at Zion Reformed church, conducted by Rev. Ernst with interment in the Englehorn cemetery.
