Herbert Bailey Sr., age 77, of Lansing, died Monday, August 25, 2003, at Thornton Manor Nursing Home in Lansing. A Memorial Mass was held Saturday, August 30 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Graveside military rites were accorded by the Gustav F. Kerndt Post #5981 of the VFW at Gethsemane Cemetery following the Memorial Mass. Herbert was born in Lansing August 19, 1926, to Walter and Sophie (Krieger) Bailey. Herbert was married to Ruth Pfaff, who later preceded him in death. Early in his life, Herb was a river pilot for many years. While doing that he operated Herb and Mary's Bait Shop in Lansing. He also was a commercial fisherman. Also, Herbert was a custodial Engineer at Dairyland Power, retiring in March of 1989. He loved working in his garden, was an avid duck hunter, and loved to fish and trap. He was a life member of the Gustav F. Kerndt Post 5981 of the VFW. Herbert is survived by six children, Barbara Lense of Apopka. Fla., Herb (Janice) Bailey Jr. of Oakville, Iowa, Mike (Becky) Bailey of Lansing, Mary Rose Hoehne of Galveston, Texas, Sherry Christoffer of Iowa City, and Ann Christoffer of Viola, Wis.; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and two sisters, Mildred Schmidt of DeWitt, Iowa, and Mary Jane (Wayne) Irons of Davenport, Iowa. Herbert was preceded in death by a son, Gary, in 1990 and a sister, Evelyn.
