Rites Held For Former Resident
Garnett, Kansas -- Fred W. Staadt, 85, prominent Garnett resident, died Friday, May 1, following an accident at his farm north of Welda, the day before, when he fell from a windmill.
Mr. Staadt was a prominent rancher and oil man in the community, was active in the Republican political party, he was elected to the Kansas State legislature and served from January 1949 through 1951.
Funeral services were held May 4 at the Farris Funeral Home, with the Rev. P. L. Mitchell officiating; burial in the Paola cemetery.
F. W. Staadt was born at Postville, Iowa, April 12, 1874, where his parents, Edward and Hannah Mitchell Staadt, had settled after leaving Germany. He graduated from Postville High School and attended Upper Iowa University at Fayette. During his college days, at a statewide collegiate athletic event, held at Davenport, Iowa, he was rated fourth best all-round college athlete.
When Mr. Staadt was 21 he and his brother, Edward, came to Paola where they followed agricultural and livestock pursuits. In 1903 he married Minnie Ackerly, who in 1909 passed away at the birth of their son, Homer. On November 5, 1918 he was married to Clara Nicholson of Garnett.
Mr. Staadt was a member of the Paola Odd Fellow Lodge for over 60 years. He was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association and was active in 4-H Club work.
He is survived by his widow, a son, two grandsons, two great grandsons, and a brother, Edward, of Los Angeles, California. He has many nieces and nephews.
