Gordon Hansmeier

Gordon “Gordie” E. Hansmeier, 86, of Waukon died Monday, September 2, 2013 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Thursday, September 5 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martins Funeral Home assisted the family.
Gordon Elmer Hansmeier was born August 20, 1927 on his parents' farm in Jefferson Township, rural Waukon, the son of Elmer "Joe" and Ruth (Sherman) Hansmeier. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School in 1946.
August 18, 1951 he married Marcella Adel Schlitter at Zion United Church of Christ. Gordie was a long-time dairy farmer on the Hansmeier family farm. He retired from farming in 1990.
Gordie was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, where he served on the council, Equity Co-op Board, Farm Bureau and served as a trustee for Jefferson Township. Gordie enjoyed bowling, playing pool, golfing, playing cards, dancing and listening to the Toe Tappers and Little Dale and the Legends. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Gordie was a very social person.
Survivors include his wife, Marcella of Waukon; three sons, Dan Hansmeier of Rochester, MN, Dave (Cindy) Hansmeier of Decorah and Daryl (Nadine) Hansmeier of Davenport; five grandchildren, Lisa and Kenny Hansmeier, Karla (Jeff) Schechtman, and Scott and Keryn Hansmeier; three sisters, Marilyn Perin of Webster City, Lorraine Peake of Center Point and Mary Jo Seaba of North Liberty; and a sister-in-law, Jean Hansmeier of Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Thomas Hansmeier; and three brothers-in-law, Charlie Peake, Glen Perin and Jim Seaba.
Honorary casketbearers were Beth Baxter, Meryle Honn, Mary Cuvelier, Julie Magner, Tom and Karen Regan, Calvin Shindoll, Judy Sweeney, Lyle and Jackie Westby and Wesley Winters. Casketbearers were Ray and Les Winters, Tom Baxter, Larry Magner, Joe Sweeney and Ron Opfer.
