Everett M. Kirkeby, age 73, died Saturday, August 16, 2003, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 21 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, rural Waukon. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 20, at Hanson Funeral Home, Waukon. Everett was born July 16, 1930, to Henry Kirkeby and Ella Vangen Kirkeby. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. On June 1, 1954, he married Kathryn Waters in Hanover. Everett and Kate lived in Waukon. Everett worked at the Waukon Coop and tended bar at the KC Tap for 10 years. He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation until his retirement. Everett enjoyed reading, fishing, and playing cards. Over the years he enjoyed traveling to several NASCAR races with his sons and grandson. He loved to spend time with his children and took pride in helping them with their home projects. He had a quick wit and offered colorful advice. Everett was a member of the VFW, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and the Waukon Volunteer Fire Department, which he served for over 40 years. Survivors include his wife, Kate; four children, Everett "Bill" (Peggy) Kirkeby of Thompsonville, Mich., Richard Kirkeby of Ankeny, Iowa, Cindy Kirkeby of Waukon, and Mark (Brenda) Kirkeby of Frankville, Iowa; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Harlan Kirkeby of Decorah and Wayne Kirkeby of Ridgeway. He was preceded in death by a sister, Delores, and a grandson, Mark. Casketbearers are Vince Mathis, Herk Herman, Kenny "Whip" Troendle, and Earl Waters. Honorary casketbearers are members of the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Waukon Volunteer Fire Department.
