Waukon -- John Opfer, 78, pharmacist here since 1900, died Sunday morning in a Lacrosse, Wis., hospital.
Mr. Opfer opened a drug store here in 1900 following his graduation from the University of Iowa pharmacy college. A year ago he sold the store to Francis Sullivan, but continued to serve as a pharmacist. He was active in civic affairs, a former member of the city council, a Mason and a member of Zion Reformed church.
Survivors include a son, Lloyd, of Independence; two daughters, Mrs. Althea Harrison and Mrs. Howard Martin, both of Waukon; two grandchildren, a brother and two sisters. Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Zion Reformed church. The body is at the Martin funeral home.
