Obituary for Charlotte Pieper Waukon Standard Dec. 24, 1908

Mrs. Charlotte Pieper, whose death we mentioned briefly last week, was born April 10, 1823, in Germany, her maiden name being Charlotte Stock. She grew to womanhood in her native country and was married to Mr. Frederick Portner, with whom, in the year 1854, she emigrated to America, the family landing at Lansing (IA) July 4th of that year. They, at once, made a home for themselves east of Waukon, later moving to west of town. Mr. and Mrs. Portner were the parents of nine children, three of whom died in infancy, and one son, in October 1885. Mr. Portner passed away November 2, 1862, and three years later was married to Mr. Charles Pieper. Mr. and Mrs. Pieper remained residents of the country until 1887, when they moved to town, Mr. Pieper dying the following year, since which time Mrs. Pieper has made her home with her children. The five children who remain to mourn her death are Mrs. Minnie Schafer, Shaler, Iowa, Mrs. Caroline Snitker, Ludlow, August, Ludlow, Mrs. Mary Winter, Ludlow, and Mrs. Lizzie Fisher, Lexington, Neb, and one brother, Fred Stock of Ludlow. There also are thirty-six grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren besides a host of friends.

Mrs. Pieper was a charter member of the German Presbyterian church and remained a most faithful earnest member to her death.

The funeral took place last Thursday afternoon at Zalmona church, Rev. Kruse, pastor and Rev. Elliker of Waukon officiating.
