Freda Grant, age 98, of Waukon, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Monday, July 21 at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements.

Freda Julia Grant was born July 4, 1905, in rural Waterville, the daughter of Erick and Hilda {Uglum} Leiran. She was baptized and confirmed at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church and attended the rural "Bakkum" School.

On June 30, 1930, she married Alger Haas. They were later divorced.

On October 30, 1940, she married James Aaron Grant. They were also later divorced.

From 1951 until 1985, Freda lived at Elon, where she was a switchboard operator for the telephone company for 9-1/2 years. In 1985 she moved to Waukon where she lived first at Southcrest and then in a home with her daughter until moving to Northgate Care Center in 1998.

Freda was a long-time member of Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, its Ladies Aid, and the Esther and Sarah Circles. For six years she was a volunteer at Makee Manor. She enjoyed handiwork, especially crochet and knitting, was an excellent cook and baker, and looked forward to each and every visit with her family and friends.

Survivors include four sons, Gerald (Dolores) Leiran of Long Beach, Calif., Vernon (Elsie) Haas of Anaheim, Calif., Ronald Haas of La Crosse, Wis., and David (Dolores) Grant of Liscomb, Iowa; two daughters, Lorna Rychecky and Marilyn (Orlean) Ellefson, both of Waukon; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Patricia Valentine and Florence Turner; five grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Emmert Leiran; two sisters, Mathilda Fredendall and Selena Busness, half-sisters Emma, Hannah, and Lena; and half-brothers Michael, Selmer, Martin, Ole, Leonard, Melvin, Oscar, Julius, and Hjalmer.

Honorary casketbearers were Nancy, Pam, and Becky Leiran; Karen, Doug, Steve, Denise, Val, Jackie, and Alessia Haas; Jean and Janet Rema; Debbie Colsch; Melissia Valentine; Kimberly and Kevin Grant; and Belinda, Karla, and Tori Ellefson. Casketbearers were Tom Haas; Richard, Rodney, Randy, and Russell Rema; and Brian, Kerry, and Curtis Ellefson.
