Waukon, Ia. - Gerald Schwarzhoff, 23 year-old farm [illegible], living near Dorchester, was Allamakee County's third drowning victim in three days. He drowned Sunday noon in the Iowa River, 15 miles northwest of [illegible] while wading with several other youths about his same age. The victim couldn't swim and witnesses to the tragedy told Sheriff King that he accidentally slid off an eight-foot ledge and when would-be rescuers reached him, he fought them off, finally disappearing beneath the surface. The body was recovered an hour and a half later. Attempts at recesitation proved futile and the body was removed to the Pleumer-Bakke Funeral Home here. Funeral arrangements had not been completed Monday.

The victim was the youngest son of Chris Schwarzhoff, farmer, three miles northwest of Dorchester. His mother died Christmas, 1935. Surviving are his father; three brothers, Francis, Emmett and [illegible], all of Waterloo Township, and two sisters, Mrs. Edward [illegible] of Chicago and Mrs. [illegible] of Caledonia, Minn.
