Alice L. Hager, 84, of Waukon, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 24 at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon with Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements. Alice Lorayne was born November 15, 1918, in Waukon, the daughter of Ray and Della (Invick) Palmer. She grew up in the Rossville area and was baptized and confirmed at Rossville Presbyterian Church. In 1931, her father died. Later, her mother married Howard Thies, who raised her as a step-daughter. Alice attended rural elementary school, then boarded with friends in Waukon until graduating from Waukon High School in the Normal Training Program for teachers. She taught rural school in the French Creek area in the late '30s and early '40s. On February 7, 1941, she married Donald Simon Hager at the Presbyterian Church Parsonage in Waukon. Alice and Don farmed in Ludlow Township for many years and she did some substitute teaching in the area rural schools. They retired from farming and moved to Waukon in 1977. Alice was an active member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday and Bible School and participated in Ladies Aid, Circle, and PW. She was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed history. She also liked to write poetry, spend time outdoors, and enjoyed dancing and playing cards with her friends. She also loved to spend time with her family and was a loyal follower of their activities and sporting events. In recent years, Alice fought the effects of glaucoma and Parkinsons Disease, but did so with determination and never lost her good sense of humor. Survivors include her husband, Donald of Waukon; a daughter, Donelle (Jerry) Daugherty of Cedar Rapids; two sons, John "Jack" (Denise) Hager of Waukon and Allan (Jane) Hager of Champlin, Minn.; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Allan (Jan) Thies of Red Wing, Minn.; and a brother-in-law, Frank Hager of Waukon. She was preceded in death by her father Ray, her mother Della, and her step-father Howard.Casketbearers were her grandchildren, Scott, Jeff, and Steve Daugherty; Mike, Jon, and Drew Hager; Christy O'Neill; and Dillon and Cassie Hager.
