Mrs. Elizabeth Haas, Lansing’s oldest woman and pioneer mother of Allamakee county, died Sunday morning at 12:10 o’clock, after an illness of about four months, in her 99th year. She was born June 14, 1829 in Bavaria, Germany and came to this country as a young woman on March 23, 1850. On May 23, 1851 she was married to Landelin Haas, a soldier of the Mexican War, who preceded her in death June 3, 1895. About a year after marriage they came west to Allamakee County and seventy-five years ago last June passed through Lansing in an ox wagon, bound for the old homestead in French Creek township, where they lived until the death of Mr. Haas, and where they endured the hardships and privations of early settlers in those pioneer days. They raised nine daughters and one son, and two children died in infancy.
