Postville Review, Fri., 8 Nov. 1912. (condensed).

James M'Ewen was born of Scotch parentage on River Rouge, Argenteil county, Province of Quebec, July 25, 1830. He came to the vicinity of Postville in 1855 and lived in either this or adjoining counties the remaining 57 years of his long life, till he attained the age of 82 years, three months and 6 days. October 17, 1863, he was married to Maria Stiles, who survives him. To their union five children were born, three of whom died in childhood during an epidemic of diphtheria. The remaining children are a daughter, Ethel ( Mrs. George L. Marsh of Chicago) and a son, Lynn S. McEwen of Postville. There is one grandson, James McEwen.

Mr. McEwen was a successful teacher, farmer, merchant and banker. The interests nearest his heart were the Citizens State Bank and the schools of Postville. Of the former he was the organizer and the head during its whole life to the day of his death, twenty-one years. For a still longer period he was a member of the Postville School Board and always the best friend of both teachers and pupils.

Death came to him without warning, a fitting end to a ripe, useful and active life. He had been at his usual post in the morning and died in his chair by the fireplace at the home. Though he had not recovered fully from a fall last winter in which his shoulder was broken, his health had been fairly good and he had regained a surprising amount of his former activity. But a worn out old heart ceased to beat and that was the end.

Funeral services were held at the family residence November 3rd, conducted by the Rev. W. R. Mellot of the Methodist Episcopal church, assisted by Rev. J. F. Childress of the Congregational church.

Besides those already mentioned Mr. McEwen leaves three sisters: Mrs. D. Macallum of Kingston, Ontario; Mrs. Crosby Davis of Ottawa, Ontario; and Mrs. William Johnson of Montreal.
