Death of Leo Crowley

Leo Crowley, 73, New Albin, passed away Sunday morning February 2 in his home after a lingering illness.

He was born May 16, 1895, near New Albin in Houston County Minn., a son of James and Bridget (Thornton) Crowley. He was educated in the local schools and on August 2, 1928, he was married at Winona, Minn. to Elsie Jordan. Except for four years when the couple lived in La Crosse, Wis., he was a lifelong resident of New Albin.

Mr. Crowley served in the Army during World War I and participated in three major battles. He received the Victory Medal.

He was employed as a railroad section hand for several years and became janitor of the New Albin school in 1945, a position he held for 12 years until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Patricia) Sommermeyer, Madison, Wis.; one son, Earl, of La Crescent, Minn.; 4 grandchildren; two brothers, Joe of New Albin and Leonard of Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Melhorn, White Bear Lake, Minn., and Mrs. Arnold (Zeta) Anderson, Sauk City, Wis.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Military funeral services were held at 9:30 am. Wednesday, February 5, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, New Albin. Rev. Edgar Kolfenbach offered the Mass of Requiem. Burial was in the New Albin Cemetery.

Casket bearers were: Gilman Beeler, Tom Zeimet, Jim Donahue, Harry Lenz, Otto Kubitz and Ernest Richards.
