DOCTOR A. A. SCHMIDT, PROMINENT LOCAL PHYSICIAN PASSES. Founder Of Local Hospital Had Lived Here Over Twenty-Seven Years.

Dr. Arthur Albert Schmidt, an only child of Dr. Henry and Catherine Schmidt, was born 22 Jan. 1872, at Guttenberg, IA., and passed away 22 Jan. 1934, his 62nd birthday, in Postville Hospital, which institution he had established, at Postville, IA. His demise following a severe attack of streptococcle throat.

As a lad he accommpanied his parents to Richmond, MN, where he spent his early life. After high school he graduated with honor from St John's University. As his grandfather and father before him had done he determined to enter the medical field and attended Keokuk Medical College at Keokuk, IA, graduating in 1893. His first practice was at Garnavillo, IA, where he remained for about 12 years. On 13 June 1895 he married Miss Ottila Brandt, which union was blessed by three children.

Early in 1906 Dr. Schmidt located, for brief periods, at Fort Dodge, IA, and Richmond, MN. In Nov. of 1906 he came to Postville, IA, where for the past 27 years he has enjoyed a large and lucrative practice. Here he established Postville Hospital, the first institution of its kind in Allamakee Co., and recognized as one of the finest small town hospitals in the state. In late years he has been ably assisted by his daughter, Dr. Joyce G. Spurling.

Dr. Schmidt was outstanding in his field and held in high regard by those of his profession. He was ever a student and kept fully abreast of advancements in the medical field for the benefit of mankind.

Fraternally Dr. Schmidt was affiliated with A.F. & A.M. and O.E.S., he was a beneficiary member of M.W.A. and A.O.U.W., of which last named organization he was Master Workman at the time of his death.

As a husband, father, citizen and friend Dr. Schmidt measured well up to the stature of a man and his passing will be mourned by all who knew him. The tenderest sympathy of his legion of friends goes out to those bound to him by a closer tie.

Dr. Schmidt is survived by his wife, two daughters: Miss Leila Schmidt and Dr. Joyce G. Spurgeon, both of Postville. One son, Aloys, preceded him, having died at the age of 5 years and 2 months.

The funeral will be held from the Postville Community Presbyterian church today (Thursday), conducted by his brotherinlaw, Rev. Marvin Brandt, of Akron, OH, and assisted by Dr. R. F. Galloway and the Masonic fraternity. Interment will be made in the family plot at Garnavillo, IA.
