Hiram B. Cornell was born in Stanfordville, Duchess County, N.Y., Sept. 1, 1828, and died in Postville, Iowa, Dec. 21, 1900, aged 72 years, 3 months and 20 days.

He was married in 1847 to Phoebe Begordess, who died in 1857. In 1855 he came west, settling in Dwight, Ill., where he has resided most of the time since, engaging in the railroad and hotel business. Dec. 29, 1859, he was married to Mary Clark, in Albany, N.Y. Three children were born of this union, two of whom survive him. Dec. 4, 1899, he, with his wife came to Postville to live. She died Feb. 13, 1900, since which time he has made his home with his son.

For several years he has suffered from ill health and Thanksgiving evening was taken with the illness from which he died. Through his sickness he was grateful and passed away peacefully, without a struggle. A son and daughter and two sisters and a brother survive him: Mrs. G. Kaylor, Dwight, Ill.; A. E.. Cornell, of this place; Mrs. E. A. Smith, Dwight, Ill.; Mrs. Angeline Case, Chicago, and C. H. Cornell, Kankauna, Wis. He was a man of cheerful disposition, honored and respected by the many friends he leaves behind.

Note: Hiram and Mary Cornell are buried in Postville cemetery area C. The "d" in the surname Begordess may be a different letter.
