Funeral services were held for Mrs. Lela Schnuelle Thursday, July 13, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Robert Hupp officiated. Frances Fitzpatrick served as organist with special readings by Candace Benham and Chad Schnuelle. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Monona Cemetery at Monona, Iowa.

Lela Ida Henrietta Schnuelle, the daughter of William and Anna (Fischer) Harnack, was born October 10, 1910 at Froelich, Iowa. She passed away Monday, July 10, 2000 in Palmer Lutheran Health Center at West Union, Iowa. She had reached the age of 89 years and 9 months.

She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. She attended the country schools near her home.

On November 28, 1935, Lela was married to William Schnuelle in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Monona, Iowa. To this union 5 children were born. The family lived on a farm approximately 5 miles northwest of Postville. Following the death of her husband, William, Lela moved to an apartment in Postville. She became a resident of the Oneota Care Center in Decorah, Iowa and then the Good Samaritan Center in West Union, Iowa.

Lela was a good mother and her children remember her as always being there for them, especially when they were ill. Her family was important to her and she enjoyed having them come to visit. Her hobbies were taking care of her flowers, painting, and she loved to put puzzles together. Her children and grandchildren will especially remember their grandmother for her apple cream pies and homemade rice puddings with raisins.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William, who died October 26, 1986; a grandson, Travis William Schnuelle; a sister, Laura Bundrick and a brother, Arthur Harnack.

Surviving are her children, Genevieve (Delfred) Milbrandt of Waucoma, Iowa, Georgia (Dale) Sowers of New Hope, Minn., Gene (Wanda) Schnuelle of Postville, Marjorie (Al) Spilde of New Hope, Minn., and Junior (Annette) Schnuelle of Blair, Neb.; 13 grandchildren, Susan (Roy) Schultz, Ramona (Gene) Rubendall, Yvette (William "Bill") Plotner, Leone (Tim) Johnson, Sandra (David) Knight, Warren (Michelle) Sowers, Linda (Daniel) Schnuelle, Christopher Schnuelle, Andrea Schnuelle, Chad (Diana) Schnuelle, Candace (Kyle) Benham; one step grandchild, Amy Green; 20 great grandchildren: Kerry Schultz, Sarah Schultz, Niki Rubendall, Tabitha Rubendall, Michelle Plotner, Timothy Johnson, Sarah Knight, Thomas Knight, Isaac Sowers, Logan Sowers, Caleb Lockwood, Benjamin Lockwood, Salina Green, Michael Warren, Matthew Warren, Katie Warren, Theodore Spilde, Timothy Spilde, Laura Spilde, Taressa Lela Benham, Taiton Kyle Benham, and 2 step great grandchildren, Danielle Turner and Bradley Turner, and 2 sisters-in-law, Irene (Art) Harnack and Marie (Elmer) Ihde.

Casket bearers were: Warren Sowers, David Spilde, Chad Schnuelle, Christopher Schnuelle, Roy Schultz and David Knight. Honorary casket bearers were: Gene Rubendall, William Plotner, Richard Warren, Tim Johnson, Daniel Lockwood and Kyle Benham.
