Funeral services for Dale "Whitey" Meyer were held Fri., June 1, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville. The Reverend Gary Catterson officiated.
Beverly Bacon was the organist for the funeral. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.
Dale Elmer ("Whitey" or "Jack") Meyer, the son of Alfred C. and Ella C. (Palas) Meyer, was born Oct. 10, 1927, in Postville. He passed away Mon., May 28, 2001, in Veterans Memorial Hospital at Waukon. He had reached the age of 73 years, 7 months, and 18 days.
He was baptized Nov. 13, 1927, by the Reverend E.F. Finck, and confirmed April 13, 1941, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. Whitey graduated from Postville High School in 1945. He entered the United States Army Sept. 14, 1950, and was transferred to the Army Reserve Sept. 17, 1952. He was honorably discharged April 1, 1957.
On June 20, 1953, Whitey was married to Evelyn Louise Krambeer at the home of her mother, Cora Krambeer, by the Reverend Walter T. Martin. To this union a son, Gem, was born.
Whitey worked with his father in their hatchery located on Main Street, just north of the Lutheran Church. In 1965, Evelyn and Whitey opened a restaurant called The Grill, which they operated for over 25 years. They also owned and operated Postville's first coin-operated laundromat, and Whitey delivered Borden's dairy products for many years.
Since retirement, Whitey worked part-time for the Postville Herald Leader. He was presently serving his third term on the Postville City Council.
Whitey is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dean Meyer.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; a son, Gem Meyer and his wife, Michelle; a granddaughter, Hannah Meyer, of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a sister, Jane Ann and her husband, Joseph Panoch, Jr., of Castalia; several beloved nieces and nephews and many friends.
Whitey was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, and the Postville Lions Club. He was active in the community, striving to make it a better place in which to live. He was instrumental in purchasing the Lion's Club food stand and assisted in raising funds for their many community projects.
Casketbearers for Dale "Whitey" Meyer's funeral were James Panoch, Aaron Goldsmith, Terry Meyer, Leigh Rekow, Gerald "Pete" Meyer, Stanley Krambeer, John Hyman, and Robert Schroeder.
Honorary casketbearers were LeRoy Gass, Paul Embretson, Lawrence Krambeer, Robert Roffman, Betty Helgerson, and Leo O'Hara.
