John William Ward passed away at his home in this ctiy Monday, June 30th, at one o'clock p.m., and although he had been an invalid for seven years the summons came to him suddenly and unexpected.

He was born in Kentucky, Dec. 5, 1851, later coming to Clayton county, Iowa, where he resided until 1875, when he came to Postville and engaged in the general mercantile business with R. A. T. Meyer, and the firm of Ward & Meyer enjoyed a large and lucrative trade here for many years. After many years the copartership was disolved, Mr. Ward going to Minnesota and engaging in business at various places until failing health forced him to retire and he rturned to Postville. He was an honest, upright, energenic man, a man of character and highly respected by all who knew him.

He is survived by one brother, Thos. Ward, of Millville, Iowa, his wife, one son, three daughters and a granddaughter.

The funeral was held from the home Wednesday, conducted by Rev. J. F. Childress. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
