Postville Herald, Wed., 22 July 1874. From the Lansing Mirror, date unknown.

DROWNED-- On Wednesday evening, about eight o'clock, George, a little six year old son of Anthony Schwartz, proprietor of the Union House, was playing on one of the barges of the Diamond Jo Line, lying in front of the Hays & Palmer warehouse. An older brother was sent by his parents to call George home. He was not willing to go at once, and Timoty Howard, who was standing on the barge, playfully remarked "that he would put him down one of the hatches if he didn't go home." George started to run, but approached to near the edge of the barge, and fell into the river. Without a moments hesitation Howard sprang into the water to rescue the boy. Unfortunately, however, the brave fellow was clad in heavy clothing, necessary to his use while employed on the railroad, and his thick boots at once filling up with water, drew him down like lead. He grasped Schwartz, but the fierce current rapidly whirled both down stream, and he was unable to hold up the boy. Although a number of persons were in the vicinity at the time, no skiff was to be found, and no assistance could be rendered the unfortunate beings in the river. In an incredible short time they had drifted to a point about opposite Clear Creek, north of the steam saw mill, where Howard was seen to throw up one hand, and both instantly sank to a watery grave.

The brave young man was about 25 years old, and his parents reside on Columbes Hill. He is said to have been an industrious man, and good to his aged parents. His act is that of the purest heroism, and it was a brave deed to lose his life in an endeavor to save that of a drowning child.--Lansing Mirror.

DROWNED - last Wednesday evening, after our paper had been issued, a boy about 7 years old, son of A. Schwarz, proprietor of the Union House, in this city, fell into the river from a barge in front of the stone warehouse.

A young man named Tim Howard jumped in immediately after him, with all his clothes on and tried to rescue the boy, but before assistance got to them both were drowned.

Howard's body was found the next day by dragging, and that of the boy was picked up on a tow head below Lafayette.

Howard was an industrious young man and afaithful section hand on the railroad.
