Postville Review, 10 May 1918.

Maggie Bike was born at Aaronsburg, PA, August 10, 1839. At the age of fifteen she taught school in her neighborhood and continued to teach until her marriage. During the year 1855 the family moved to Illinois and located near Freeport. In 1859 she was married to Mr. G. W. Haines who lived near Postville, Iowa, where she resided until 1901 when she moved to Fayette, Iowa, where she was living at the time of her death. On August 8th, 1872, she lost her husband as a result of a runaway, leaving her with a large family of small children.

With rare devotion she assumed the task of rearing her children. Through ill health, misfortune and adverse circumstances she never faltered. The God of the widow and fatherless was her God and her never failing help in her time of trouble. Besides her numerous home duties she took a great interest in all church work. Several summers she instructed a Sunday School in her neighborhood and also secured the services of a minister.

She joined the Methodist church when a young girl and was a faithful member through life. For several years Mrs. Haines was in poor health and the end came April 22, 1918. She is survived by two children, Capt. Fred E. Haines, of Camp Logan, Texas, Mrs. Amy Bike, of Marcus, Washington; a granddaughter, Miss Helen Haines, of Independence, Iowa; and a sister, Mrs. Kate L. Shoemaker, of Hollidaysburg, PA, all of whom were at the funeral. The funeral was held Saturday morning at Fayette and the services conducted by Rev. J. Arthur Young April 27. Interment was made at Postville.
