John "Jack" Backhaus
Funeral services for John "Jack" Backhaus were held Monday, November 23, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Gary Catterson officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Cremation took place following the service and interment will be at a later date.
John "Jack" Backhaus, the son of Albert and Alice Louise (Christofferson) Backhaus, was born July 23, 1938, in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Luana, Iowa. He passed away Thursday, November 19, 1998, at his home in Postville, Iowa. He had reached the age of 60 years, 3 months and 26 days.
He was baptized October 23, 1938 and confirmed in 1952, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. Jack graduated from the Postville High School with the class of 1956. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1956 to 1962.
On October 2, 1960 he was married to Loretta Snitker in the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville, Iowa. To this union 3 daughters were born. Jack was employed at Hy-grade Meat Products Plant in Postville for 20 years and then at the Iowa Turkey Plant for 10 years.
Jack was an avid reader all of his life. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and going to their trailer at Prairie du Chien. Jack enjoyed auctions where he searched for cupids and graniteware to add to his collection, as well as other items that they collected. He also spent many hours working in the yard and garden.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta, 3 daughters, Jackie (Vince) Peterson of Byron, IL, Tina (Dan) Klahn of Boscobel, WI, and Lori (Gary) Brockway of Postville, IA; 5 grandchildren, Cory and Krista Peterson and Kirsten, Derek and Dillon Klahn; 3 step grandchildren, Kristi and Shannon Brockway and Kari Bohr; a sister, Marilyn (Darwin) Ellis, a sister-in-law, Cheryl (Curtis) Thornton and a brother-in-law, Cleone (Kathy)Snitker, all of Postville.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 nieces, Darla Ellis Reinhardt and Connie Jean Thornton and a nephew, Dennis Ellis.
Jack was a member of the National Graniteware Society and the Cupid Club.
Casket bearers were Randall Ellis, Keith Burger, Allen Kuehl and Shannon Brockway.
