Gale Block

Funeral services for Gale Block were held Friday, August 21, 1998 in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. T. M. Marks officiated. Burial was in the Postville cemetery. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Gale Frederick Block, the son of Lloyd and Wilhelmina "Minnie" (Shafer) Block was born September 24, 1937, in Postville Community Hospital, Postville, Iowa. He died Wednesday, August 19 in University Hospital and Clinics at Iowa City. He was 60 years old.

He was baptized on October 15, 1937 and confirmed on April 6, 1952. Gale attended the country school in Grand Meadow Township near his home and also Postville Community Schools. Gale farmed with his parents and also helped the neighbors when he was needed. He was also employed at Hall Roberts' Son in Postville and in the later years he worked at the Postville Cemetery mowing lawns and digging graves. Gale had not been well as a child and his health forced him to retire early. He became a resident of Makee Manor at Waukon in 1997.

Gale had enjoyed life, visiting with friends and neighbors and taking bus trips. He loved to go and visit different places. Many people will remember that he had a good memory for dates and could tell you when events took place. He was well known in the area and always had a friendly word and a story to tell.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents and his father, Lloyd Block who died in 1995, an aunt, Velma Cleary, uncles Walter Schutte, Albert Shafer, Helmuth Schutte and Jim Hangartner.

Surviving are his mother, "Minnie" Block of Prairie du Chien, Wisc., aunts, Amanda Schutte (Helmuth), Esther Schutte (Walter), both of Postville; Bernice Hangartner of Castalia and uncles, Ray (Marian) Shafer of Waukon and Wayne Cleary of Onaway, MI and many cousins and friends.

Gale was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Postville.

Casket bearers were Loren Eberling, Byron Meyer, Bennie Fiet, Gerald Kleve, Wayne Martie and Roland Meyer.
