Postville Review, 21 Mar. 1902. From the Waukon Republican.

This community was shocked beyond measure when the news circulated Saturday evening last, about 7:00, that Frank Winter had expired, and many were loth to believe the report at first, because Mr. Winter was noticed about town but a few minutes before the grim messenger overtook him. Mr. Winter had completed his chores for the evening and was coming along on the walk opposite the residence of Jos. Haines in south Waukon where he fell to the ground. W. H. Doty. who was on his way from supper, discovered the body and summoning assistance the remains were removed to W. T. Gilchrist's drug store where efforts to revive him were made but to no avail. The remains were then taken to Greenleaf's undertaking rooms where a coroner's inquest was held on Sunday. Coroner Bradley , of Lansing, authorized Justice Stillwell to act in his stead, who impanelled the following jury: L. B. Oleson, W.W. Bulman and G. W. Haines. The verdict was that the cause of death was heart disease.

Mr. Winter was born in New York state and came with his parents to Monona in 1852. About thirteen years ago he removed with his family to Waukon and was for some time engaged in the livery business, subsequently selling out to Hall Bros. -- Waukon Republican.

Postville Review, Fri., 28 Mar. 1902.

The funeral of Francis F. Winter was held at the M.E. church Friday at 2:30 p.m., Rev. Crowder officiating. The G.A.R. and the M.B.A. attended the services and escorted the remains, Mr. Winter being a member of the last named organization. During the war of the rebellion he served his country gallantly as a soldier, a member of Co. F., 2nd Iowa Cavalry and served for the period of three years and was honorably discharged. The esteem in which he was held by his comrades was manifested by their presence at his funeral.

Mr. Winter was born at Yorkshire, New York, May 2(3 or 8), 184(3 or 8). In June, 18(6 or 8)7, he was married to Miss Cordelia Alexander. Up to the day of the funeral no word could be delivered to his son, Harry, in California, he not being within reach of telegraphic communnication, and sad, indeed will be the message.

~Submitter is not related.

!Notes: Francis F. and his wife Cordelia are both listed in the Woodmansee as being buried in Oakland - main pg. 521.

His war record in the Woodmansee book and his obit differ. Dates also should be verified. It is possible he served with more than one unit during the war, so this info. should also be verified.

Evidently his proper name was Francis and he went by Frank.
