Glenn Frederick Bente

Glenn Frederick Bente, son of Fred W. and Clara (Christofferson) Bente was born March 23, 1920 near Elkader, Iowa in Reed Township on the family farm. He died Thursday, May 4, 1995 in Central Community Hospital at Elkader, Iowa. He was 75 years old.

He was baptized in the Peace United Church of Christ at Elkader by Rev. C. H. Franke in 1920 and confirmed there by Rev. P. Kittier in 1933. Glenn attended the Pony Hollow country school in Reed Township where he graduated from the 8th grade. After graduation he farmed with his parents.

On December 6, 1941 he was married to Florence Amelia Marie Doeppke in the Zion Lutheran Church at Clayton Center by the Rev. Dorris Flesner. To this union, a son, Glen Richard Bente was born on the Fred Bente family farm.

On March 1, 1949 Glenn and Florence moved to Wagner Township near Farmersburg where they purchased a 20 acre farm and rented the Albert Doeppke farm. The following year they sold the farm to John Bossard of Farmersburg and moved to Grand Meadow Township near Gunder. There they farmed for 27 years. They moved to their present home in Postville in 1977.

Glenn was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville since 1954. He was a 4-H leader for 12 years, a Grand Meadow Trustee for 12 years, and served on the board of directors of Farm Bureau. He was president of the Gunder Cheese Factory and a director for 25 years and was a milk inspector there as well as at the Swiss Valley plant. Glenn was on the board of directors of the Big Four Fair in Postville for over 30 years and had served as president. For 21 years he had worked at Dreamland Ballroom. He was also an Archer Oil dealer for 28 years. Other pastimes included hunting, fishing and polka dancing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Glen R. Bente; a grandson, Greg Morris Bente; a brother, Raymond, who died in infancy; a brother, Lloyd Bente and a sister, Mrs. Harry (Marie) Muller.

Survivors include his wife, Florence; 2 grandchildren, Richard Bente of Postville and Annette Bente of Spokane, Wash., a great granddaughter, Ashley Bente and his daughter-in-law, Rita Bente of Postville.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 6, 1995, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. The Rev. Charles Miller officiated. Casket bearers were Bob Leigh, Don Steger, Marvin Kleve, Gerald Fassbinder, James Farmer and Donald Kregel. Arrangements were made by the Schutte Funeral Service of Postville. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.
