Mrs. Mary Ann Joice Segrist was born in Indiana, Sept. 29, 1842, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Harris in Post township, Allamakee county, Iowa, on Monday morning, November 26, 1923, aged 81 years, one month and 27 days, her demise following a protracted period of failing health.

Her husband, Lewis Segrist, died 23 years ago. She was the mother of eight children - the eldent, a son, died when he was but six months old; Mrs. Amelia Gordanier died 13 years ago; Mrs. Emma Gordanier of Ridgeway; Mrs. Francis Frye died 30 years ago; Mrs. Elizabeth Gilson of Waukon; Mrs. Carrie Harris of Post township; Mrs. Lucy Roffman and Mrs. Etta Hangarter of Franklin township survive her. She is also survived by forty-two grandchildren, one hundred and fifteen great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Segrist was one of the sturdy pioneer mothers of this section, who faced the hardships and privations that beset the early settlers of this section bravely and with determination. She was a faithful wife and devoted mother, a good neighbor and friend, who throughout a long residence in this section acquired a wide acquaintanceship and made many friends, all of whom will learn of her passing with sorrow and sympathize sincerely with those bereft.

The funeral, which was largely attended, was held from the Bethel U.B. church at eleven o'clock Wednesday forenoon, conducted by Rev. J. A. Saathoff of this city. Interment was made in the Post township cemetery.
