Postville Herald, Thur., 29 Nov. 1923.

Delorma F. Sawyer, oldest child of Cuyler Sawyer and Elizabeth Wartenbe Sawyer, was born August 29, 1852, at Janesville, Wis.

At the age of four months he came with his parents to Iowa, and two months later to the homestead which for a little more than sixty years was owned and operated, first by his father, and later by himself.

He gained a fair education, as was the custom in thise days, in the country and town schools.

At the age of 21 years he went to the western part of Iowa and engaged in various undertakings, returning four and a half years later to Allamakee county, which has since been his home, moving from the farm to (next line missing).

(first line of paragraph missing) in marriage with Miss Helen Russell and to this union seven children were born - Hazel, now Mrs. E. L. Gould of Tomah, Wis.; Dora, at present doing college work at Billingham, Washington; Homer of Waukon; Charles, of New Plymouth, Idaho; Lyle of Winnett, Montana; Paul, who preceded his father in death Nov. 13, 1920; and Donald of Winnett, Montana.

Beside his wife and children he leaves to mourn his passing two sisters - Mrs. H. C. Burnham of Waukon and Mrs. J. F. Miller of Luana - and a host of other relatives and friends.

His death occurred in the early morning of Nov. 20, 1923, at Postville, Iowa, at the age of 71 years, two months and 22 days.

A kind and loving husband and father, he will be sadly missed. He would have preferred to live, because he enjoyed life and the association of his fellow-men, and was ever ready to lend a helping hand whenever needed. Of a sunny and friendly nature, he made friends of most of his aquaintances.

Conscious to the last, he realized the crossing was near, and stated to those about him that while life was sweet his passing was also welcome, as he was at peace with heaven and earth and his faith complete in a God who knows his children and forgives their frailties.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at the home of his sister, Mrs. Miller, near Luana, conducted by Rev. Gammons of the Waukon M.E. church. Burial was made in the Hardin cemetery. The large attendance at the services and also at the cemetery bore evidence to the multiplicity of his friends, and gave comfort to the family. And thus another pioneer is laid to rest.
