Marena (Barham) Smith, daughter of Nathan and Jackie (Webb) Barham, was born at Charleston, Illinois, on August 7, 1847. She was the tenth child in a family of six boys and five girls, all of whom preceded her in death. She passed away at her home near Frankville, Iowa, on May 22, 1931, at the ripe age of 83 years, nine months and 15 days.

When but a child she came with her parents to Iowa and located on a farm near Waukon. Before her marriage she taught in the rural schools of Allamakee county.

On November 10, 1864, she was united in marriage with David Smith, who preceded her in death 30 years ago. To this union two children were born, Ida and Ira.

After their marriage they lived near Myron for 36 years, after which they moved to a small farm near Frankville. Her husband died shortly after this and she and her daughter Ida have made this their home ever since.

In her early life she was a Free Methodist; but later the family joined the Bethel U.B. church.

She is survived by her two children, Ida and Ira, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of friends.

Mrs. Smith was always cheerful and patient. She was fond of music and flowers. She loved her family and home and was happy and contented in her christian life.

The funeral services were held last Sunday afternoon from the Frankville Community church, Rev. Harry Dirks of Postville officiating. Interment was made in the Smith cemetery.
