Rites Are Held For Fred W. Benjegerdes
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 from the Schutte Funeral Home to St. Paul's Lutheran Church for Frederick William Benjegerdes who passed away suddenly April 18 at the home of his son Louis Benjegerdes.
Rev. Charles E. Witt, pastor of St. Paul's, was in charge of the final rites. Burial was in Postville cemetery.
Frederick William Benjegerdes was born February 14, 1871 in Garnavillo, the son of Frederick Benjegerdes and his wife Wilhelmina Meyer. He passed away very suddenly on April 18, 1955, at the age of 84 years.
He was baptized in the Lutheran Church April 29, 1871 and confirmed April 13, 1884 in Garnavillo. He was married to Caroline Elizabeth Schulte on March 4, 1897. To this union were born two sons, Henry Benjegerdes and Louis Benjegerdes, both of Postville.
After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Benjegerdes lived a year in Garnavillo, and in 1898 moved to a farm two and one-half miles west of Postville. They moved into the town of Postville in 1904, and then to Dubuque with their family in 1907. After a year they moved back to the farm near Postville. They retired in 1931 and moved to the town of Postville again.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife on October 23, 1952, one brother John Diedrich, at the age of 16, three half-brothers, and one half-sister.
He is survived by his two sons, Henry and Louis of Postville and six grandchildren.
Mr. Benjegerdes was active in community life. He was a member of the Church Council of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville for many years, serving as its president and vice president, a member of the building committee when the present church was constructed, and at various times in his life a member of the Bloomfield township school board, the Farmer's co-operative board, the Citizen's State Bank board, the Big-Four Fair board, and the Cemetery association.
